One of the many confusing aspects of Jailbreaking that new users struggle to understand is the concept of a ‘tethered’ and an ‘untethered’ Jailbreak. After the huge success made by Pod2G to bring iOS 5.0.1 Untethered jailbreak ….
…. for A4 devices and just after Pod2G announced releasing the iOS 5.0.1 Untethered jailbreak, all users now have got the ability to jailbreak their devices by using two methods which are Redsn0w 0.9.10b3 and Corona 5.0.1 Untether jailbreak tweak.
When a device is Jailbroken a new ‘App Store’ is installed on the device called Cydia.
Cydia allows users to install third party applications, tweaks and themes which are submitted to the store by various developers, hackers and programmers. The content contained within Cydia is as varied as you could possibly imagine and ranges from full standalone applications to small tweaks designed to hook into Apple’s iOS via something called ‘MobileSubstrate’. When Cydia is installed on the device, some modifications are made to the existing architecture of the operating system, these mods are largely unknown to us as users, however they become more prominent when discussing the notion of a tethered and untethered jailbreak. Please see below for an explanation;
iPHONE GUIDES (INSTRUCTION) “HOW TO MAKE”:
Tethered Jailbreak – this means that if you EVER reboot, restart or lose power to your device post jailbreak, then you will need to boot your device up connected to a computer to enable the Jailbreak functions to work. The device itself will boot up normally without this ‘tethered’ connection, however, all Jailbreak features will be disabled, and also due to the aforementioned changes in architecture, some native iOS services will also cease to function, with the most prominent being mobile Safari browser. This is not as daunting as it seems, as the Jailbreak tool will generally have ‘boot as tethered’ option which simply patches the kernel again (temporarily until next reboot) and boots the device up.
Untethered Jailbreak – As you might imagine this is the reverse of the information above. An untethered Jailbreak is what we aspire to, and is the ‘ideal’ solution. It means that once the kernel has been patched and the Jailbreak procedure is complete, you can power down, hard reset or reboot your device as often as you like without issue. This type of Jailbreak is considered the ideal for many tangible reasons, but one which affects most Cydia users is that many of the tweaks available through Cydia require the device to be rebooted after installation, this becomes increasingly annoying if you need to perform a tethered boot each time.
But now what should you do ? Well We don’t know how long it will be before the group releases an iPad 2/iPhone 4S jailbreak, but we’re thinking it’ll be sooner rather than later. In the meantime, make sure your devices are on iOS 5.0.1, So keep yourself updated with our blog to get latest news from Pod2G about the public release for the jailbreak….

And last, but not least @p0sixninja (http://theiphonewiki.com/wiki/index.php?title=User:Posixninja), the leader of the Chronic Dev Team, and my partner for years on iPhone security research has started to code and fuzz the Apple sandbox.
We now have a dream team to find a path for a public release of the A5 jailbreak.

UPDATE:
iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak on iOS 5.1 / 5.0 is making a good progress. Pod2g, has announced today that he has achieved some milestones on iPhone 4S jailbreak battle. Pod2g and Dream Team of Jailbreak have managed to fix some caching issues with iPhone 4S while he trying to port untethered jailbreak.
The well know iPhone developer Planetbeing has just tweeted some interesting news on his Twitter account. The iPhone 4S untethered jailbreak and jailbreak for iPad 2 Dream Team was able to achieve a significant progress in Sanbox issue. He just confirmed that the Dream Team now out of the Sandbox with Saurik’s invaluable help.
As we told you above, that iPhone 4S untetthered JB and iPad 2 is matter of days, here’s what he said :
“Now it should be a matter of days. Still no precise ETA of course”.
