iPad 5 Specs and Media Event confirmed. The new iPad 5th generation is a lot smaller than the previous iPad, but still maintaining a 9.7″ screen. What has been reduced is the left and right bezels which are basically non existent. This only leaves some space above and below the screen to keep the camera and home button features. It is also a lot thinner, and smaller in every dimension in comparison to its previous models.
It has been referred to as a stretched iPad mini, following on the successful design of the Apple iPad Mini to a thinner, sleeker new Apple iPad 5. The same curves and edges of the Apple iPad mini have been utilised.
The real question at hand is how will Apple manage to manufacture this device! The release of a retina screen for the previous iPad releases brought on a heavier, bulkier design in order to increase battery life thanks to extra drainage from the screen. There have been suggestions that a new screen technology may be used, such as IGZO. This will allow for better battery life and a smaller design. Furthermore, a a smaller, less power hungry A6X chip is suspected to be used in the Apple iPad 5th generation, and the device itself is expected to match in processing power the previous generation Apple iPad.
Overall the main changes are expected to be a slimmer, smaller profile and design, as well as an A6X chip, improved battery life, possibly a new screen technology and reduced weight. These are expected to be the main selling points of the Apple iPad 5th generation. These are not necessarily groundbreaking introductions however the Apple iPad Mini proved to be successful in its design. The Apple iPad 5th generation is just following in the Apple iPad Mini’s successful footsteps.
In terms of a release date, it was previously expected that Apple will be releasing the Apple iPad 5th generation in March, however this has seemed a little unrealistic for some with mass speculation that a release date will be prolonged due to processors and screen parts being hard to come by in such large quantities. It has also been speculated that if IGZO is actually the screen technology being used in the Apple iPad 5th generation, then Apple will begin to rely quite a lot on Japanese company Sharp. This company has been experiencing financial difficulty and the introduction of IGZO screen technology may be an excellent way to rejuvenate the Sharp company. Find out more about IGZO technology
